PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Sacrament of Confirmation is the second of the three Sacraments of Initiation. It perfects our Baptism and brings us the graces of the Holy Spirit that were granted to the Apostles on Pentecost Sunday.
There are five ways the Sacrament of Confirmation affects our lives:
  • Affirms our identity as sons and daughters of our loving Heavenly Father.
  • Unites us more firmly to the person of Jesus Christ, who has saved us and now dwells in us through Baptism.
  • Increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which we received at Baptism, to help us along the path of sanctification.
  • Strengthens our bond with the Church (the Body of Christ) more perfectly.
  • Gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ—to confess the name of Christ boldly and never be ashamed of the Cross.
Receiving Confirmation is a bold and beautiful decision. Our goal is to direct the minds and hearts of our young people toward what is true, good, and beautiful—that they may see God's presence in their daily lives and know their identity as children of God. Even more so, to accept God’s sanctifying work in their lives, which fulfills our deepest human desires and binds us more perfectly to the heart of God.

Preparation for Confirmation is a two-year program.
Year One:
Each student will receive a journal filled with activities, prayers, reflection questions, video links, and more—designed to guide them deeper into their faith before formally beginning Confirmation preparation. This journal immerses students in the liturgical life of the Church and provides opportunities to strengthen their relationship with God within the natural setting of their home and family life.
This first year lays a foundation of strong spiritual habits to prepare students for the second year of Confirmation Prep.
  • Journals will be distributed at the Parent Meeting on September 7, 3:00–4:15 p.m.
  • Four checkpoint dates will include large group meetings to support families and ensure candidates stay on track to complete their journals on time.
  • Completion of the journal is the “ticket” into Year Two.
Year Two:
Candidates will participate in Confirmation classes and a retreat designed to foster deeper conversion and openness to the gifts and promptings of the Holy Spirit. After receiving the Sacrament, each candidate is called to continue living as a disciple—an active member of our parish community.
We strongly encourage all those preparing for Confirmation to also participate in EDGE or Life Teen, where they can grow in faith alongside their peers.

Schedule

Year One:
September 7, 3:00–4:15 PM – Parents pick up journal at Parent Orientation Meeting.
November 17, 6:30–8:00 PM – Checkpoint #1: Large Group Meeting and completion of Section 1
February 2, 6:30–8:00 PM – Checkpoint #2: Large Group Meeting and completion of Section 2
March 23, 6:30–8:00 PM – Checkpoint #3: Large Group Meeting and completion of Section 3
April 27, 6:30–8:00 PM – Checkpoint #4: Large Group Meeting and completion of Section 4
  • Involvement in EDGE: All 6th–8th grade students are invited to participate in EDGE programming—an ideal way to form Christ-centered friendships and find support in living their faith. Students won’t want to miss EDGE Sunday Group and all the exciting events planned for the year.
  • Catholic school students complete Year One through their theology class and spiritual life at school. While registration for Year One is not required, you are encouraged to participate in all EDGE activities.

Year Two:

Confirmation classes will consist of 13 sessions from September–April, generally on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month (some sessions may vary)
  • Non-Catholic school students are required to attend at least 10 of the 13 classes.
  • Catholic school students are required to attend at least 7 of the 13 classes.
We encourage all candidates to attend every class, even after meeting the minimum requirement, to get the most out of the program.

TBA – Confirmation Rally - This event, hosted by Bishop Jacques, is a mandatory event for our candidates and will count as one of the 13 required sessions.

Confirmation Retreat
Time: 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Location: Coastal Retreat, Isle of Palms
Estimated Cost: $100
The retreat is an essential part of Confirmation preparation. If you are unable to attend, you may schedule to participate in the Jr. High Rally (Fall) or the EDGE Retreat (Winter).

Other Important Dates for Year Two:
October 26 – Submit Sponsor Form
The form must be signed and sealed by the sponsor’s pastor.
March 22 – Submit Personal Testimony - As stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, every candidate preparing for Confirmation is asked to profess the Faith. This is done during the Rite of Confirmation through the renewal of Baptismal Promises. To make this moment more intentional and meaningful, each candidate will write and present a personal testimony about their relationship with Christ and the Church.
Questions to reflect on:
  • How have I encountered the love of God in my life?
  • Why have I chosen to say "Yes" to the Sacrament of Confirmation? What am I saying "Yes" to?
  • Why am I Catholic?
  • How did I encounter Jesus through the service work I did this year?
  • Why did I choose my Saint name? (Need help choosing a Saint? CLICK HERE.)
January & February – Discernment Conversations
Candidates will reflect on their growth, ask questions, and create a discipleship plan for life beyond Confirmation. This is also an opportunity to discern their readiness or choose to delay receiving the Sacrament.
May 14 – Confirmation Mass
A rehearsal and Holy Hour (including Reconciliation) will be scheduled in preparation on May 13. More details to come.
